“The reason you don’t have what you want is that you don’t ask God for it. And even when you do ask, you don’t get it because your whole motive is wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure” (James 4:2-3).
Have you noticed how some people always have the answer, no matter the nature of the issue? If you haven’t, I know I have. This is what I mean: people who provide simplistic solutions to life’s complex problems can leave a trail of hurt people behind them. Since we are talking about GOD and JESUS, let me use preachers (particularly Tele-evangelists) as my example. Several times I have heard so-called “faith healers” tell people who had just experienced a serious ailment/illness/sickness that the reason they aren’t healed after they have been prayed for is because they (and not he the faith healer) lacked faith. I mean, how cruel can you get?
My Dad was an ear specialist and so had a school where all the students were both hearing and speech impaired and in some cases, blind as well. At one point as a small boy, a visiting evangelist/faith healer visited and during his crusade asked all those not feeling well to come on stage; about a 100 or more people went up, including one of my Dad’s deaf students. The faith healer prayed called on the demon of sickness and deafness to be cast out en masse.
He then, as usual, told all those who had been healed to be brought forth. One of those who was brought forth was, you guessed right, the deaf student. The following day, it was all over the media as to how this student had been healed; the media contacted my Dad about the “healing” and my Dad simply brought forth the student, still hearing and speech impaired; and what is sad is that this information was, right there at the crusade, relayed to the faith healer that no “healing” had occured and yet still they chose to go ahead and announce a “healing” done by GOD.
I’ve heard another well-known speaker teach that to have answers to personal problems, you have to be filled with the Holy Spirit (read speak in tongues) whilst another claimed that the answer to loneliness was to accept JESUS as your Saviour. Know what? These may be answers for some situations but certainly not for all. Some of our problems are physical in nature including biological problems; numerous other problems could also be attributed to emotions: caused by unresolved negative feelings and/or by marred relationships, and some by multiple different spiritual causes, etc. For some problems a combination of all three (or more) could be the result.
Beloved, the causes of our problems can be very complex and multiple and to tell a person who has a toothache that he has a demon or doesn’t have enough faith to be healed is ignorant, insensitive, cruel and possibly even life-threatening; and certainly not Christian or Christ-like.
Haven’t you heard the saying, “If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail”? May I suggest we stay clear of such hammer doctrines and theologies; they are wicked and are not of the truth, not unbiblical and certainly not of God.
Proposed prayer: “Dear GOD our Father, please help me to be sensitive to the needs of others and never give simplistic solutions to life’s complex problems. Help me to understand the nature of human suffering and always seek the truth about the true causes of my own and other’s problems when called for and thereby pray accordingly. I thank You for hearing and answering my prayer, in Jesus’ name, amen.”
Have a lovely day.
